Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (Game Review)

The first time I played this game, I was like eight. that was when the game was first released in 2001 for the Play Station 2. Even then, I thought it was a really awesome video game. and eleven years later, I still do. :)

Its rated as M for Mature because of it's violent context or something, but that did not matter to me back then because I had no idea what I was doing. I just liked the fact that I was killing soldiers. lol. anyway, here's my review.

Story Line: There are two chapters in the game. the first one is the Tanker Chapter wherein the main character is Solid Snake. He is aided by his friend Otacon in a mission to get photographic evidence of  a new Metal Gear being transported in an Oil Tanker by the Marines. Next is the Plant Chapter wherein the main character is Raiden. A rookie soldier with a mysterious past. he there to rescue the hostages kept by terrorists. There are a lot of twists and a revelation about Raiden's past that will surely hook you and would make you want to play on.

Game Play: Controls are easy enough to understand. the Graphics are nice, considering this was one of the first games to be released for the PS2. the camera is easy on the eyes as well. If you're like me, who gets dizzy easily by playing games with cameras that follow every damn movement of the character, this game is for you. Saving is also good. because it's not one of those games that you have to find a save point forcing you to continue on until you find one, no. here, all you have to do is call.

Weapons: For the Tanker Chapter, you will only get two weapons. the M9 tranquilizer gun which, according to Ocelot is a converted Baretta M92F, designed to fire tranquilizer guns. Later on, you will acquire the USP (Universal Self-Loading Pistol). The USP can be equipped with a suppressor, but I've played the game over 5 times and never found it. its really loud, so if you're going around and sneaking through the sentries, best use the tranquilizer gun. its quieter, but not deadly. For the Plant Chapter though, you get an array of weapons. You'll still get the M9, and a handgun called SOCOM, which is similar to the USP, but I'm not exactly sure what their differences are, apart from the fact that the SOCOM has a suppressor. You'll also get the M4, AKS-74u both assault rifles the latter can be equpped with a suppressor, PSG1 and PSG1-T both sniper rifles and the latter being a Tranq gun. the RGB-6, a grenade launcher, the NIKITA, a remote controlled ground level missile, Stinger which is used to battle the metal gears, and the Harrier. Apart from these awesome guns, Raiden will also get a High Frequency Blade. It will be used in the final battle of the game. That blade is Kick Ass. You also get grenades with different functions, such as the Chaff Grenade, used to jam electrical stuff, like security cameras and the like, Stun Grenade, used to knock out sentries, and of course, the regular deadly grenade. Claymore mines are there too. plant them on the ground and watch as sentries walk on to them and get their legs blown off. That's about it I think for weapons.

Review: The game has five difficulty settings: Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard and Extreme. I've only played in Very Easy- Normal Modes. never hard and Extreme. somehow, I just feel like I'm not ready for that. lol. but with every difficulty setting, the game experience is different. the items are also located differently, like, in VE and E, the M9 in the Plant Chapter is located just there in the start of the game, but with others, its on a different place.
Over all, I think its a brilliant game. Hideo Kojima, the game designer and creator, out did himself in this installment in the Metal Gear series. This will have you playing for hours on end. I know I did.

Rating: I give this game 5 stars. I loved every minute of the game. by the way, my game time was 11 hours and 35 minutes. :)

I know this review is like, eleven years too late, but I still wanted to share my experience and to give praise to the people involved in making this video game possible. MGS2 was the first Metal Gear game I played, the next was MGS3: Snake Eater, which I will make a review of soon.

That's it. I hope you liked my review. leave a comment if you liked or hated my review. and give me other PS2 games You want me to review. thanks!
